Creative and Practical Ways to Save Money

This summer I'm taking a few weeks off of work and it's great motivation for us to tighten the purse strings and be more intentional about how we spend our money. I asked some friends to send me their best practical tips for saving money and got some great advice! Here goes...

Eat Out When It Counts

"I had to take a serious inventory of my output vs. input to recognize how much money I was spending just on food! Living in a big city in my late twenties, a lot of my entertainment revolves around meeting friends for brunch, lunch, dinner, you name it. I initially started cutting back by bringing my lunch to work every day- the $7 dollars for Chipotle or Whole Foods daily really added up. I've saved a lot of money just by making this one change.

I still go out to dinner pretty often (it's fun!) but I try to limit myself to one glass of wine, or save leftovers for dinner the following night at home. Even just being conscious of how much of my income was going towards meals has helped me make better decisions- everything in moderation!"

Track What You Spend

"I think the biggest tip for saving is figuring out a system to identify how much money you really spend on different things (how much you think you spend and how much you really spend tend to vary greatly). My husband and I have mint.com linked to all of our accounts and have categories that we tag all of our expenses to on a weekly basis. Once we had a few months of information from mint.com we then were able to sit down and discuss how much we want to budget for different types of expenses. From there its just tracking and maintaining an ongoing dialogue about how we are trending month to month."

Living More Simply - Less Stuff!

"The main way we save money is by living simply! For us right now that means living in the Tiny House but overall, it is a priority for us to not buy stuff in excess of what we need. Practically this means not buying on impulse but rather thinking it through a bit first. We believe this will allow us to be more generous with our resources--yes money but also our time! We've already experienced that less stuff=less maintenance and therefore requires fewer minutes and hours from our day."

Meal Planning

"Every Sunday, my husband and I decide on what we are going to eat for the upcoming week. We typically do this while in the car on the way back from our weekend travels or while enjoying our morning coffee.  I am a bit addicted to Pinterest so we will often scan through my newest pins for fresh ideas when we get in a rut.  Then, we compile our grocery list including any bulk items we may be running low on. This helps me stay focused at the grocery store and also avoids throwing away perishable foods that spoil before we eat them.  We usually only meal plan for weeknights, leaving the weekends free to eat out or order in." -Tracy

Online Discounts

"I've purposefully never memorized my credit card numbers. I think it keeps me from making impulse purchases online because I have to go to the extra trouble of getting my card out and punching in the numbers if I want to buy anything.

I set up an email account that I use only for subscribing to mailing lists for different places I shop. Whenever I want to buy something from one of those places, I'll pull up the email account to see if they've sent out any coupons or promo codes lately. My primary email doesn't get clogged up with tons of junk mail, and sometimes I end up getting to buy what I want at a discount. Many places I shop send out discount codes every week."

Creating Multiple Savings Accounts

"One of my biggest challenges in savings was making sure that saved money stayed in it's rightful place.  Prior to meeting and marrying my financially responsible husband, I was often known for saving up and then splurging at the latest Nordstrom sale or a friend's impromptu suggestion for a weekend getaway.

In my experience, I've found that the antidote to spending my savings was creating a multitude of savings account and naming them for very specific purposes.  My husband and I have at least 10 joint savings accounts between us, from categories like the obvious house savings, vacation/travel, and our daughter's college fund to the more specific categories; such as Christmas (gifts and Christmas card expenses), Riley's expenses (day to day spending; toys, clothes, etc.), doctors, makeup, etc.  We've found that Capital One 360 savings is the best platform as there are no fines for accounts with balances below $300.  It's all online which may deter some, but it is incredibly user friendly and accessible, especially since you can easily set up monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly transfers from other online bank accounts.  We usually time these transfers around when our paychecks drop, and budget around the remaining amount, so every month small increments of money get shuttled over to our various savings accounts.  Whether it be an account that receives a meager $5 a month to those where we save much more, this plan has afforded us a really solid savings foundation over time, which we only foresee growing. I would highly recommend this plan to anyone!"

A Gmail Tip & A Pretzel Story

Hello again from another airport, OAK to be exact. Gate 26 next to the Auntie Anne's Pretzels.  I have two things for you this morning.

1. For all you Gmail users out there, have you enabled Google's Search Field Trial? It is THE BEST. No more frantically searching through emails on your iPhone to find your flight details. All you have to do is a google search for "my flights" and the top of the search will bring back ALL of the flights in your Gmail. It works on a computer as well, as long as your logged into Gmail.

2. Did you know that Auntie Anne was Amish? The smell of pretzel goodness has broken me down, I'm about to go get a pretzel from Auntie Anne's, while I do, here's the story of Anne Beiler, an amazingly strong woman- and if you want more, she even wrote a book about it!

T-Shirt Scarf

We are on Mr. Kate! And here's the story of how it happened. Way back at Thanksgiving, my sister and I wanted to do a craft project together. We thought it would be nice to do something creative while we are all sitting around and staring at each other in a trypotpaen induced haze. We decided to try the t-shirt scarf tutorial from Mr. Kate. It was super fun and easy.

The finished product definitely wins the prize for oddest variety of people complimenting it. The first day I wore it a woman who appeared drunk on the street stopped me to tell me how much she liked it. It was also approved of by a very stylish friend and the guy bagging my kombucha at Whole Foods gave me a , "Whoa, cool scarf!"

I typically stick to crafting projects that don't involving sewing or anything too complicated and this is one of those: an old t-shirt, some broken jewelry, scissors and and a glue gun is all you need. It's a great option for a present too!
We ended up sending a few pictures in to Mr. Kate and she just featured us on her blog! Check out the tutorial and pictures here.

Life Saver: Dry Shampoo

This stuff is AMAZING! I walked into work yesterday morning without having washed my hair for three days and got compliments on my “messy updo” after using this fabulous dry shampoo. Although it’s a bit pricey, it’s totally worth it for the time and energy saved in not having to wash, dry, straighten, curl, etc as often. I’m in love.

Wedding Wednesday: Three Tips for the Big Day

I’ve been to a lot of weddings. A LOT. Close to 300. Crazy, right? When I’m not blogging, I’m a professional photographer. My husband and I have our own company called JKoe Photography. We have been shooting weddings for almost 10 years now and in that time,  I have seen pretty much everything: the good, the bad, the totally unbelievable. One time, I helped a mother of the bride put her spanx on. After all of these weddings, Jason and I have come up with three pieces of advice, the three essential tips for having a beautiful, fun and stress free wedding. We share with this with all of the couples we work with and now, here it is for all of you:

Friday Roundup

Happy Friday! Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? Teresa and I are having a girls night and going to dinner with friends at Palace Kitchen. The rest of my weekend will be spent hoping for sun, as we have a few photo shoots scheduled. Perhaps some cooking will happen too.

Here's one dish I want to try this weekend, Quinoa Mac & Cheese.

Then maybe some no-bake cookies for dessert. Am I the only one that was obsessed with no-bakes as a child? I think Teresa was too, she's the one who found the recipe. I'll have to share the cookies with her I guess... especially since they are gluten free!

Here's a great way to wrap books as gifts. So many thoughtful touches.

Looking for a good movie this weekend? I saw this one the other day and liked it enough that I'd actually go again. It's very original and it takes place in Seattle!

Hello Giggles has a post that made me smile, Famous Ladies and Their Cats.

Patterned tights.

Did you know, if you send Mickey and Minnie Mouse a wedding invite, you'll get a response? Here are the details.

What NOT to name your baby.

Incase you want to sound posh and work words and phrases like "holidaymaker", "serviette" or "cheerio" into your vocabulary, wikipedia has a page entitled List of British Words Not Widely Used in the US. There are also things like "bum bag" and "shonky". It's a fun list.

One last thing. I pinned this on pinterest the other day but it's getting no love. So, I'm forcing you to read it here. Enjoy!

A Weekend In: Portland

Patrick and I spent Valentine’s Weekend exploring the great city of Portland, Oregon. We both started new jobs this fall so it’s been a crazy season for us and we were looking forward to our weekend away. How appropriate to spend V-day weekend in the City of Roses! We spent three days eating delicious food, walking the waterfront, indulging in rich desserts and cocktails, and people watching on the streets of Stumptown.

Here are some of the highlights of the weekend. (Disclaimer: As you can see from the list below, we are foodies.  As much as we love to take in local culture, sight see, shop, etc, we tend to eat our way through the cities we visit, seeking out and devouring all the best local goodies.)

Fabulous desserts at Papa Haydn (they have gluten-free cheesecake!)

Fresh and locally grown brunch at Tasty N Sons - try their bacon wrapped dates, to die for!
Lovely walks through the eclectically weird and wonderful Pearl District and lovely Portland waterfront.

Sipping Stumptown Coffee and browsing the endless books at Powell’s.

One-of-a-kind cocktails and delicious local seafood at Beaker and Flask.

Things we want to do next time we visit: tour Portland's famous rose gardens, spend a night at the luxurious Nines or hip Ace Hotel, check out one of the local brewery’s (Deschutes looked like a fun place to hit up! Did you know one of Portland’s nicknames is Beervana?!), and eat a few strangely delicious Voodoo Donuts.

Traveling Light: The Perfect Piece of Luggage

With Jenny on her way home from Africa today I have air travel on the mind. This summer Patrick and I spent three fabulous weeks traipsing around Europe before making the move from Dublin back to Seattle. We booked a lot of our travel on RyanAir and were therefore confined to one extremely small piece of carry-on luggage each (10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm). I challenge you to measure how small this is!! RyanAir measures and weighs your bag before you get on the flight and if it doesn't fit their regulations they charge you 40 euros to check it.

It was sort of miserable trying to pack three weeks worth of travel items into one tiny piece of luggage, but guess what? I LOVED traveling light!  It was so convenient to have such a small bag while traveling on train, plane and automobile. I never had to struggle to get the bag up stairs or through a small door (okay, okay, who am I kidding? Patrick carried my bag most of the trip, as evidenced by the photo below).

The tiny suitcase that I bought is one of my favorite things now. It's perfect for weekend or even week-long travel and it forces me to be very strategic about what I pack (lots of accessories to jazz up the same outfit!)

This is P carrying all of our luggage in Amsterdam: his backpack and my mini-roller.

Sharing earphones on the plane.

Here is an adorable suitcase combo with packing list from Apartment Therapy. Also, their choices for best pieces of luggage

This expensive collapsible Lipault orange bag is to die for. O Magazine even voted it the Best Soft Wheelie.

Great tips we used on how to pack for RyanAir.
