Wedding Wednesday: Finding the Perfect Dress

Happy Wedding Wednesday! Today it's just a few simple tips that'll hopefully make the whole dress process easier, good luck shopping and come back next week for more.

The best piece of advice I could give anyone about picking the perfect wedding dress is this:
Don’t walk into the store set on a certain dress or style. Instead be willing to try on a variety of dress styles to see which best fits your body type. When the person helping you at a wedding boutique brings you dresses you wouldn't have picked yourself, try them! Just think about how many ladies they've helped find dresses. Their job is to know what dresses look good on what body types. Don't be afraid to branch out a bit. Even beautiful dresses lose the wow factor when they don’t fit correctly so be sure to choose the dress that makes YOU look amazing.

Nelle, the bride in the photo above had one of my favorite dresses of last year. Right now, there are some amazing, artistic and unique dresses available. Don't be afraid to stray a bit from the traditional and find something that's uniquely you. You can see more of Nelle's wedding here.

Also...
Take a few trusted advisors with you. When dress shopping, bring people you KNOW will be honest and not just tell you what you want to hear. They will be able to see the dress from every angle when it's on you.  You want to be sure to get something that doesn't just look good from the front. For your entire ceremony, your guests will be looking at you from the back and side! From the pictures to the ceremony to dancing at the reception, this is definitely a day you want to be sure to look great from every angle.

And finally...
Find a great seamstress you trust. When you finally choose a dress, you'll be measured to find the the size that fits your largest measurement. That means if your chest fits a size 6 and your hips are a 10, they are ordering the 10 and expecting you to pay more to get the dress tailored to perfectly fit your body. Sometimes this will take a couple of rounds of alterations and this is definitely not something you want to skimp on. Be willing to shell out money for alterations, it makes a HUGE difference in how the dress ends up looking and how comfortable you are in it. Trust me, you don't want to spend your whole wedding day hiking up your dress and wondering if you accidently flashed your Uncle Larry when you bent down to hug your grandma. And as a photographer, I can tell you we don't like having to edit nipples out of shots (yes, this happens people).  If you have a set dress budget, it's a good idea not to spend all of it on the dress alone, be sure to include alterations in the total. You want that thing to fit you like a glove.

PS. Here's a really interesting blog post on how celebrities get ALL of their clothing altered. That's why everything fits famous people so well...

  1. I made the mistake of buying a dress at the first shop I went into.

One month before the wedding, I changed my mind about it.

Luckily, I found a beautiful dress that was much more my style and that I was able to buy off the rack. With some QUICK alterations, I was ready to go one week before the wedding.

And I ended up selling my first dress on eBay. :)

  3. I'm so glad you stress not going into a store with a specific idea in mind as the dress for you. I'll admit the dress that I fell in love with, that I'll wear when I get married, was the last one I ever expected. I didn't even pick it off the shelf, the store lady did and I couldn't thank her enough! Keep your mind and your heart open and the perfect dress will find you, promise.
