Mary Kate and Ashley's Photo Secret

So apparently Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have a little photo secret that is called "The Prune." Yes, you read that right, THE PRUNE. Before they go into a photo shoot or a place where their photo will be taken they turn to each other and say the word "Prune." This relaxes their facial muscles and give them that little pouty face that you always see them making.  I'm really terrible at non-smiling pictures so I'm going to have to give this a try. I tried to "Smize" when that was a thing but it was pretty much a fail. Are you good at taking pictures without teeth-smiling??

I am not a fan of the Pumpkin Spice Lattes at Starbucks. Yep, I said it. Did you see John Oliver this weekend ranting against them? Hilarious. I would however, be more interested in drinking something a little more natural like this. Have you ever tried to make one at home?

Have you seen this new viral video called "Weird Things All Couples Fight About?" It made me laugh out loud -- and also feel not unique at all!

I am very particular about how to fold towels, to the point that I refold when Patrick does them because it drives me crazy in the cupboard! Also, we can never decide what to eat (and by we I mean me).

Baby Got Back at the Symphony

Here's a video to make you smile this Tuesday morning. Seattle's own Sir Mix-A-Lot performed with the Seattle Symphony (yes, you heard that right) on Friday night and invited any ladies from the audience to join him on stage to dance along to his performance of Baby Got Back. If that's not enough to hook you, Seattle superfan Shawn Bounds's amazing dance moves have made the video go viral. She was interviewed on the local news, ummm can we please be friends?? Happy Tuesday everyone!

This article made me laugh. Game of Thrones premier next weekend! I'll be waiting until after Lent to catch up but I'm excited for this season because I didn't read this far in the books so everything will be a surprise.

Stop everything and listen to this charming, hilarious and fascinating discussion between This American Life's Sarah Koenig and her mother MRS. Matthiessen (and don't you dare call her Maria). Mrs. Matthiesen has seven hard and fast rules regarding topics that should never be brought up in conversation, not because they are taboo but because they are just downright boring. These topics include how you slept, your period, your dreams, route talk (how you got from point A to B), your health, your diet, and money. I'm definitely guilty of bringing up all of these topics on a weekly basis! During the show, Sarah sets out to prove her mother wrong by finding a fascinating story on each subject. It's well worth listening too.

"Natural Makeup"

I stumbled on the above graphic and it made me chuckle (and cringe a bit).  This is so true! I rarely leave the house without at least mascara and under eye concealer on which looks like "no makeup" but makes me feel more alive.  What about you?

Sleep Deprivation and Cat Videos

As you can imagine, this new mom is sleep deprived about 90% of the time right now (apparently five week old babies don't like to sleep at night!). One of the results of this is that I get pretty loopy and the laughter gets a bit out of control (like to this ridiculous commercial). Seriously though, at 3:00am sometimes the only thing that gets me by is a marathon cat video viewing session. And boy did I find a gem. You won't regret watching this one -- the keyboard player and drummer are my favorite!!

And no, I haven't watched it like six times in the past 24 hours. ;)

Pat and Terri

The topic of name pronunciation and nicknames came up at our slumber party a couple of weekends ago. It was interesting to hear different people's perspectives on their names being shortened and whether or not to correct people when your name is mispronounced.

When we lived abroad people often shortened Patrick and Teresa to Pat and Terri. I'd never been called Terri in my life before that! I didn't corrected anyone because it's not a big deal to me and I thought it was kind of funny but if it was happening on a regular basis I might get more upset.

A friend of mine has a unique European name that is constantly being mispronounced, she said it's better to correct people right away so that it's not awkward down the line when they finally realize they've been mispronouncing it for a long time.

Do you correct people if they mispronounce your name or use an over-familiar nickname?

A Mid Week Cat Pick Me Up...

How's your week going? I'm celebrating the little victories of small accomplishments and attempting to ignore the large pile of things that I still haven't gotten to. It's been one of those weeks. It always is when I get back from out of town. So much to do and so little time. Anyway, I thought we could all use a little cat humor. These never fail to make me smile. 

My Niece the Boss-Lady

Indulge this new auntie for a moment. I got the most hilarious email from my sister-in-law, Kasi, last week with photos of my niece Kenedee on my brother-in-law's birthday. Kenedee (who is three months old today!) has an adorable, expressive little face and Kasi's captions were so spot on. Sometimes I really do think kids see their parents as "employees!" Enjoy some cuteness this Monday morning!

The Dangers of Kindle-Reading

So, I hesitate to broadcast this story because it makes me look ridiculous but alas, isn't that sort of the point of having a blog?

Yesterday I discovered the dangers of reading on a Kindle (vs. real books) when I turned on my Fire to continue reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. I have been working my way through this massive book for the past couple of months and enjoying it’s Game of Thrones-style take on the building of a fictional 12^th century English cathedral. It’s one of those books where each part is told from a different person’s perspective and when I left off a couple of weeks ago it was at the beginning of a new part. I thought it was an appropriate place to pause my reading and pick it back up with the introduction of a brand new character at a later time. That later time turned out to be yesterday morning when I wanted to curl up with some leisurely Sunday reading and dive back into Pillars. As I started reading the new character I was introduced to was none other than Catherine Moreland, who seemed to be an average girl accompanying her wealthy neighbors on a trip to the English city of Bath. Some of you more astute readers may be catching on at this point…I did not.

I continued to leisurely read for an HOUR getting into the new story with a few lazy questions popping around in my head such as – when is everything going to go awry for our “heroine” (as is the trend in Pillars)? is time-travel a part of this book because this can’t possibly be the same period the rest of the book takes place in?  how is this story of a debutante innocent young woman going to fit back in with the priests and carpenters who are rebuilding a country cathedral??? And then, after 60 minutes (I kid you not)….I realize I have been reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austin.

You have been warned! Make sure you are reading the correct book on your Kindle – especially if the majority of your reading consists of classic English novels and British historical fiction. ;)
